Teaching visual communication classes in the Journalism and Media Production department at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, with a specialization in data visualization and design. Classes include Visual Communication, Video for the Web, Introduction to Data Visualization, Multimedia Content Creation, Multiplatform Reporting, and Narrative Storytelling. Serving on the Faculty Senate as a clinical faculty representative, and treasurer for the Association for Faculty Women.

Oversaw a site redesign, managed online content and promoted stories on social media. Designed a custom layout for a long-form project about Sprague Avenue and wrote about Spokane history, the fight over genetically modified food and many other things.

Researched and made graphics – including maps, timelines and charts – for print and the web. Helped out with the reporting and writing for bigger projects and breaking news.

Wrote online updates and in-depth magazine articles about public information access laws, internet communication, and legislation related to schools and student media, with an emphasis on freedom of information laws and issues. Assisted with video, graphics and illustrations to accompany stories. Provided feedback and ideas for website redesign.

Worked as a general assignment reporter for the city desk, writing stories on deadline and developing longer features. Covered early and late shifts, responsible for posting breaking news to the website with relevant links and working with the web editor to update those stories for the print edition. Suggested and coordinated maps and graphics to accompany stories for print and online. In the position of editorial assistant, conducted research, checked facts and answered readers’ phone calls.

Reporter, photographer and designer, August 2005 to May 2008
Guided the vision of the newspaper and led a staff of 15 editors and more than 50 other staffers during a period that included a new university president, millions of dollars in campus renovations, high-profile men’s basketball seasons, and turmoil in the campus police department that led to a yearlong search for a new chief. Emphasized multimedia training and successfully petitioned for new equipment. Oversaw a redesign of the paper and the construction of a new website. Reported with an emphasis on community features, campus safety and historical retrospectives. Took news photos and created timelines, maps and illustrations. Organized and produced various special sections.
The Indianapolis Star
Pulliam Fellow intern, June through August 2007
Worked in the features department writing stories for the daily paper and weekly entertainment sections. To best cover the temporary “Harry Potter beat,” proposed and ran one of the paper’s few blogs with multiple daily entries, relevant links, photographs and reader interaction. Contributed to brainstorming sessions with other Pulliam interns to generate new ideas for website organization and content.

Wrote community features and wildfire updates. Generated story ideas and assisted other reporters with editing and database research. Learned about the existence of AP Style. Discovered that being a reporter is really fun as long as you don't mess up.
